A Preface written by Shikdar Mohammed Kibriah , on the poetry book THE LAST AIR composed by Taghrid Bou Merhi, Lebanon-Brazil

Preface

What is poetry? Many poets, scholars and critics define it in many ways. But I used to like to define poetry as an aesthetic philosophy of life. Why so, in fact, poetry is a high classed art, and the artistic sense is nothing but an aesthetic feeling. If so, then why I mentioned it as an aesthetic philosophy is a question indeed while we, poetry lovers or art seekers must know that poetry is not a logic or science or like that of any particular subjects. And, aesthetic feeling is mostly subjective, not objective. In reality, to be formed, poetry generally collects its formative elements from the experienced world through sensation which are explored with an intellectual way of amazement and meditatively reaches to a self-satisfaction of feeling beauty that we mean aesthetic feeling. It is insightful and wholly soulful. And, so we call it subjective. But this subjective feeling is never devoid of objectivity as it is produced, inspired and motivated by natural objects. As it is inevitably applicable to achieve a lively philosophy of life, it is applicable to poetry too. The difference between philosophy and poetry is that philosophy is naturally logical while poetry is aesthetic. But their similarity or harmony is significantly not ignorable. We, our existence and experienced life is never solely a logical total, in fact, it is a total of various kinds of feelings which can be joyous or tragic, lovely or ugly, compassionate or cruel, Pathetic-apathetic-sympathetic and so on feelings and emotions that touch our sensation and beat our heart. Poetry is the voice of this heartbeat. It is reasonable and aesthetic as well. So, poetry is an aesthetic philosophy of life that significantly holds all kinds of experiences, feelings and emotions in it and forms itself to an aesthetically feeling wordy project. This artistic project of words reveals the insight of universal truth beautifully proportioned to the poetic ability of the poet. I have been inspired to speak so because of reading poetry composed by Taghrid Bou Merhi in her new book “The Last Air”.
Taghrid Bou Merhi, a globally published, awarded and translated renowned multilingual poet from Lebanon living in Brazil. She has authored 17 books and translated 22 books to date. She is an active member of various literary and creative platforms and editor of 8 Magazine Arabic. She is not only a poet and writer but also a literary personality well known to the world. However, here in this book she is appeared with her recently composed poetry. The cover name of this book is “The Last Air” in which 48 poems in total. At a glance of her poems it seems to me that, most of the poems are involved in a form of meditation on life and existence, as I mentioned first that poetry is actually nothing but a philosophic exploration of the things and beings that is aesthetic too, Taghrid Bou Merhi composed her poems through this true feeling process of universal truth and beauty in the way of intellectual perception and soulful intuition. And, therefore, It is my expectation that true poetry lovers or art seekers will not be deprived of poetic aesthetic feeling as well as philosophy of life. She portrayed her poetry wholeheartedly using needfully metaphors, symbols and rhythmic tunes of poetry that is truly spontaneous and simply touchy to our heart and soul; and it fills our sensation with a feeling of beauty that is absolutely aesthetic.
Relevantly, here some of the titles of her poems are mentioned to have an idea of her poetry in this book The Last Air. My Philosophy, In the middle of the Dream, It’s hard to argue with Silence, A Vicious Circle, Alone on the edge of the night, With all his loneliness, A metaphysical tragedy, Biology of myths, Delusion, Moment of absence, Just a story, The last air etc. may serve as keys to the importance of the topics addressed in the poems, relating to human connection with life, continuous contemplation beyond life—a secret known only to the Absolute. The poems express fear, anxiety, reflection, and questioning, sometimes depicting a solitary soul grappling with the unknown or finding solace in divine verses. At times, the poems rebel against the harsh realities of a world filled with evil and injustice, offering advice and ways to live in peace. The poems encompass everything a person may think and experience in their personal, social, and existential life. In conclusion it is simply to say, her poetry is as lovely to read as lovely to dive in it to pick up solid pearls of universal truth and beauty that only can ensure the safe, stable and peaceful existence of humanity.
